Bird News

The 2w Iceland Gull continues to be seen erratically at Blackborough Tip, along with Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls. The Tip is not currently working at the weekends, so this lessens the chances of the birds being active. Sensible viewing of the surrounding area may prove fruitful!

A leucistic Common Gull seems to have caused some confusion at Hockwold (was Lakenheath) Flashes, where there was an erroneous report of an Iceland Gull - see pics on Surfbirds Scarcity page.

A Grey Phalarope was reported east past Holme on Sunday, with the Red Kite still present in the area, along with occasional sightings of the Glaucous Gull at Titchwell, where 3 Spotted Redshank are present.

Bitterns are being found at unusual sites and there are still good opportunities to see displaced Woodcock and Snipe due to the weather conditions. There are also seemingly larger numbers of Pale-bellied Brent Geese, with 6 currently in the Cley area.

A fascinating set of Greylag movements have been noted by the BTO, with Orkney bred and ringed birds turning up in Norfolk and then returning back. See:

  2. I know that the original reports came from a reliable observer at Blackborough, however, have just taken for granted the more recent ones!!
